The word “brainwash” comes from China. In Chinese, the word is written as 洗腦. The first character means “wash.” The second character means “brain.” When the word was transliterated into English, the order of the characters was reversed. Thus, the word “brainwash” was born. The word was popularized during the fifties, after the Korean War, once the world discovered that the Chinese were brainwashing American POWs.
